Ventura’s Gonzalez Gives Top Wrestler a Scare

Ventura High’s Cristobal Gonzalez nearly defeated the nation’s top-ranked wrestler in the 189-pound class on Saturday night at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Gonzalez eventually was decisioned, 7-5, by two-time defending national champion Justin Ruiz of Utah Taylorville in a championship match.
Gonzalez’s second-place finish in the country’s elite tournament assured him of All-American status.
Ventura’s Joe Martinez upset top-seeded Joe Parry of Las Vegas Cimmaron with a 14-6 major decision, but eventually defaulted to Jose Figueroa of New Mexico Salpoint because of a back injury.
The Cougars finished 18th in the tournament, which was won by Oklahoma Choctow.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Burroughs 2, Crespi 1--Miguel Meneses’ second goal of the game came with three minutes left and gave the Indians (7-1-4) a nonleague victory at Crespi.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Burroughs 6, Hoover 0--Lisa Palermo scored five goals and Krisi Biser scored once for Burroughs (6-5) in a Hoover tournament pool-play game.
The Indians captured the tournament championship--which goes to the team that scores the most goals in two games--by scoring 12 times.
In an earlier 6-1 victory over Glendale (0-8), Palermo scored twice and Biser scored once.
Burbank 5, Glendale 0--Molly Raine and Jennifer Shaw each scored three goals for the Bulldogs (7-3) in two games of the Hoover tournament. Earlier, they defeated Hoover, 4-0.
