Texas El Paso’s Haskins Is 10th Coach to Win 700
EL PASO — Coach Don Haskins got his 700th career victory on Saturday night as Jonathan Bomba’s tip-in at the buzzer--his only basket of the game--gave Texas El Paso a 66-64 victory over previously undefeated Southern Methodist in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Haskins, 700-328 in 37 seasons at Texas El Paso, is the 10th coach in NCAA Division I history to win 700 games and second this season. Missouri Coach Norm Stewart reached 700 victories on Dec. 23.
Haskins won the NCAA championship in 1966 when the school was known as Texas Western.
“Winning 700 games means a lot to me but I’m glad it’s over,†Haskins said. “All the talk about the 700 wins puts a lot of pressure on the players, and we can do without that.â€
Texas El Paso is 9-2, SMU 10-1.
