Sanchez Has the Touch for Cal Lutheran
Nicole Sanchez scored 29 points for Cal Lutheran, but her defense was the game-saver.
Sanchez blocked a last-second three-point shot to preserve the Regals’ 74-71 victory over Occidental in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Occidental.
Sanchez made 10 of 15 shots and blocked the last shot by Bobbie Celaya, who played at North Hollywood High.
Anna Celaya scored 30 points for Occidental (7-14, 3-6 in conference play), which caught Cal Lutheran, 52-52, with 8:02 left, but never took the lead.
Missy Rider had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Cal Lutheran (14-7, 9-1), which can clinch the SCIAC title by beating Pomona-Pitzer on Friday night at Cal Lutheran.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Birmingham 4, Sherman Oaks CES 1--Krissy Oakes scored twice for the Braves (14-2-1) in a West Valley League game at Sherman Oaks CES.
Cleveland 3, San Fernando 0--Brynne Blumstein scored three goals for the Cavaliers (15-5-1, 7-2-1) in a West Valley League game at San Fernando (2-11, 2-8).
North Hollywood 4, Reseda 0--Julie Lopez scored two goals to help the Huskies (6-5-2, 6-3-1) clinch third place in the Mid-Valley League at North Hollywood.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
Chatsworth 206, Marshall 264--Kay Lee shot even-par 37 for the Chancellors (1-0) on the front nine in a City 5-A match at Wilson Golf Course.
Granada Hills 226, Grant 233--Julie Park shot a six-over-par 42 for the Highlanders (1-0) in a City 5-A match at Knollwood Golf Course.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 5, Louisville 2--Robert Lindstedt won at No. 2 singles for the Waves (6-1), defeating Chris Steel, 6-1, 6-1, in a nonconference match at Louisville.
Lindstedt teamed with Kelly Gullett at No. 1 doubles to defeat Steel and Michael Mather, 8-4.
