Ramirez’s Strong Effort Leads Titans Past Bulldogs

Cal State Fullerton got eight solid innings from starter Erasmo Ramirez as the Titans defeated Fresno State, 6-3, in a nonconference baseball game Friday night at Fresno State.

Ramirez gave up seven hits and one walk and struck out 10 to pick up his first victory of the season.

The Titans (4-3) led 6-1 in the top of the ninth when Fresno State got three hits and two runs off reliever Kirk Saarloos. Jason Stewart relieved Saarloos and got the final out.

Ryan Moore had two hits and Ryan Owens hit a home run, his second of the season, for the Titans.

Mike Williams led Fresno State (0-6) with three hits, a run batted in and a run scored. Jason Fanconi and Carlos Aukerman each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

The game was a pitchers’ duel until the seventh inning when the Titans scored two runs to take a 4-1 lead. Fullerton added two in the top of the ninth.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Nevada 88, Cal State Fullerton 68--Nevada shot 50% from the field compared to the Titans’ 32%. Andrea Thieme scored 16 points Nieshia Cleveland had 14 for the Titans (8-13). Ieesha Donadelle had 23 points to lead visiting Nevada (15-7).

In the Arizona softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 7, Massachusetts 3--Wendi Griffin’s fifth-inning single was bobbled in right field and Nikki Hart scored to start a four-run rally for Fullerton in a pool-play victory. Jana Oetgen gave up nine hits over seven innings to record her first victory of the season for the Titans.

Fullerton defeated Purdue, 2-0, in a pool-play game.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 4-3, California Lutheran 1-0--Jen Houston pitched a six-hitter in the second game for SCC (3-1). Valerie Irwin had a two-run double in the first inning for the Vanguards.

Gretchen Brandt pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts in the first game.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, Cal State Los Angeles 4--Yutaka Nakamura, Chapman’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Joey Flynn of Cal State Los Angeles, 6-3, 6-4. In another singles match, Chapman’s Nicolas Johnson defeated Dat Huynh, 6-1, 6-1. Chapman is 1-1.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

San Diego 8, UC Irvine 1--The No. 1 doubles team of Darian Chappell and Mai Nguyen kept UC Irvine from being swept by host San Diego with an 8-5 victory over Mirja Wallmark and Anja Tragardh. The Anteaters are 2-3.
