Saddened by ‘Defections’ From High School Tennis

It is so disappointing to hear of the tennis player “defections†from local high school teams. High school tennis involves much more than just how great the matches are. This can be particularly true for the better players.

The high school tennis season runs approximately three months. Contrary to what many private coaches say, playing in or just attending and rooting for your teammates at two or three matches a week will not keep good players from their college scholarships. Nor will it keep them from playing on the pro tour, should they be talented enough.

High school tennis, and high school in general, is about young men and women preparing to be better adults. High school tennis is not about winning at all costs. It is really about building friendships, learning leadership qualities, responsibility and, yes, sportsmanship.
