SMALL FACES: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and a reunion of Weezer leaders Rivers Cuomo and Matt Sharpe--who had split to return to college--head the cast on the soundtrack album for the youth comedy “Meet the Deedles,†due in March. Others on the ska- and surf-heavy album are Save Ferris, Goldfinger, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and Hepcat. . . .
Emmylou Harris makes a guest appearance on Vic Chesnutt’s just-completed “The Salesman Years After Bernadette,†a song cycle recorded in Nashville with the band Lambchop, a 12-piece ensemble of carpenters and other laborers who play regularly in Music City clubs. The album is due in May or June. . . .
Elvis Costello has assembled a collection of other artists performing songs he wrote or co-wrote, to be released in May by Rhino Records. Among those heard are Paul McCartney, Chet Baker, Rockpile featuring Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. . . .
With 1996’s “Electric Larryland†the first gold album of the band’s long career, the Butthole Surfers are finishing a follow-up, “After the Astronaut,†in Austin, Texas. The band’s guitarist, Paul Leary, is producing the collection, due in April. . . .
John Hiatt has recorded two new songs and new versions of three of his older tunes to be included on a 17-track best-of collection titled “Have a Little Faith in Me,†due March 31. The new version of the title track features backing by the vocal group the Persuasions, who also appear on one of the new songs. . . .
Collective Soul is set to start work Monday on a new album, to be titled “Dosage,†in a Miami studio, with an August or September release expected.
