Scholarships Open to Low-Income Students

Applications are being accepted for scholarships for low-income Valley residents attending college or trade school.
The San Fernando Valley Opportunity Through Education Fund was established in 1995 by Patricia Franco, a parole officer with the California Youth Authority.
So far, more than a dozen Valley students have received awards from the fund.
Past scholarships were worth $500 for trade-school and two-year-college students and $1,000 for students at four-year schools.
This year, with at least $25,000 available, the awards will double to $1,000 and $2,000 respectively, Franco said.
To be eligible for the OTE scholarships, applicants must live in the San Fernando Valley; attend a trade school, college or university; have a C average or higher; meet financial guidelines; and be involved in volunteer work.
Applications, due May 27, are available at the OTE office, 7555 Van Nuys Blvd., No. 203.
