Injuries Still Plague Packers

The Green Bay Packers will be without Pro Bowl tight end Mark Chmura and two defensive starters--right end Vonnie Holliday and cornerback Craig Newsome--for today’s regular-season finale against the Chicago Bears.

The Packers, who deactivated Chmura, tight end Tyrone Davis, Holliday and Newsome, have already clinched a playoff berth and will meet San Francisco in the wild-card round. However, the Packers can play host to the playoff game with a win against the Bears coupled with a loss by San Francisco. The 49ers play host to the St. Louis Rams.

Chmura was unable to practice this week because of a pulled right calf muscle. He suffered the injury in the first quarter of last Sunday’s win over Tennessee and did not return.

Davis, the backup tight end, is also sidelined because of a hamstring injury, forcing the Packers to sign veteran Scott Galbraith this week. Jeff Thomason will start with Galbraith serving as the backup.

Chicago re-signed punter Todd Sauerbrun to a one-year contract, offensive tackle Jimmy Herndon to a three-year contract and agreed to contract terms with linebacker Lemanski Hall. . . . The Jacksonville Jaguars put starting defensive lineman Renaldo Wynn on injured reserve because of a groin injury. Wynn, 24, will sit out Monday’s season finale against Pittsburgh and all of Jacksonville’s playoff games. . . . The Indianapolis Colts activated wide receiver Kaipo McGuire from the practice squad for today’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
