Blues Keep Red Wings Grounded
The frustration is beginning to build for Detroit, and now opponents can see it.
The Red Wings dropped their fifth consecutive game Saturday night, 4-3, at St. Louis. It’s the longest losing streak for the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions since the 1990-91 season.
At the conclusion of Saturday’s game, the Blues could see the Red Wings getting desperate.
“You could tell at the end they were really pressing hard,” said Scott Pellerin, who scored twice for the Blues.
The Red Wings did hold the Blues to only one shot on goal in the third. But it wasn’t enough, as Detroit entered the third period down, 4-2, and scored only once.
Mathieu Dandenault led Detroit with a goal and an assist. Larry Murphy and Igor Larionov also scored for the Wings, who are 0-5-1 in their last six at St. Louis’ Kiel Center.
Buffalo 2, New Jersey 1--Dominik Hasek continued his December shutout surge and Miraslav Satan scored both goals as the Sabres defeated the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.
The shutout was the second in a row and fourth of the month for Hasek, who made 34 saves. Hasek, who leads the NHL with seven shutouts, has not allowed a goal in 163:35.
Dallas 4, Colorado 2--Brett Hull scored two power-play goals, giving him seven goals in seven games, as the Stars extended their unbeaten streak to 11 with a victory at Denver.
Patrick Roy, who had not allowed more than three goals in his previous 19 starts, left the game with a sprained left knee after giving up Dallas’ fourth goal at 4:53 of the third period. Roy will miss seven to 10 days.
Pittsburgh 2, Ottawa 1--Jaromir Jagr scored at 1:18 of overtime to give the Penguins a victory over the Senators at Pittsburgh.
The Penguins, who were outshot 13-1 in the third period, remained unbeaten on home ice against Ottawa. The Senators are 0-13-3 in Pittsburgh since joining the NHL in 1992.
Florida 3, Tampa Bay 1--Sean Burke stopped 23 shots and Bill Lindsay had two goals as the Panthers handed the Lightning their ninth consecutive home loss before 17,983, the largest crowd at the Ice Palace since April 10, 1997.
New York Islanders 4, Boston 2--Mike Watt and Claude Lapointe scored in the third period and Zigmund Palffy scored his first goal since April 18 as the Islanders defeated the Bruins at Uniondale, N.Y.
New York Rangers 6, Carolina 3--Petr Nedved had two goals and two assists, and the Rangers scored six times in the second period for a victory at Greensboro, N.C. The six goals fell two shy of the Rangers’ record for goals in a period, set in 1971.
Montreal 2, Toronto 1--Stephane Quintal scored his first goal of the season with 4:58 remaining as the Canadiens stopped the second-longest winless streak in team history with a victory at Toronto.
Nashville 3, Washington 1--Less than a week after defeating Detroit, rookie goaltender Tomas Vokoun earned his second consecutive victory against a 1998 Stanley Cup finalist and the Predators defeated the Capitals at Nashville, Tenn.
Philadelphia 3, Chicago 2--Eric Lindros and Eric Desjardins scored in the first four minutes at Chicago as the Flyers extended their unbeaten streak to seven games.
San Jose 2, Vancouver 0--Backup goaltender Steve Shields recorded his first NHL shutout and Patrick Marleau and Mike Ricci each scored a goal as the Sharks defeated the Canucks at San Jose to win their fourth in a row.
