Senior quarterback Chris Griffin scored on a two-yard run with 7:27 remaining to give Santa Monica St. Monica its firstSouthern Section title with a 28-24 victory over Carpinteria.
Before an estimated 4,000 at Santa Barbara City College, the Mariners (9-3-1) won the championship after losing in the Division X final last season.
Senior running back Davion Doby rushed for 206 yards and scored two touchdowns for St. Monica. He rushed for 44 yards on a game-clinching drive as the Mariners kept the ball for the final 5:45.
Quarterback Ryan Gocong of Carpinteria (10-4) ran for 117 yards and scored twice. But Gocong’s fourth-quarter fumble proved costly as St. Monica answered with Griffin’s touchdown.
