Stafford’s 3-Point Play Gives Anteaters Victory
UC Irvine guard Megan Stafford made a three-point play with 19 seconds left in the game to give the Anteaters a 69-67 victory over Stephen F. Austin Saturday at the Bren Center.
After trailing the Anteaters by 15 in the second half, Stephen F. Austin rallied to take a 67-66 lead with 35 seconds left. Stafford, who scored a season-high 27 points, drove the lane for a layup, was fouled and made the free throw.
Chelsea Mackey had 15 points and eight rebounds and Kristen Cappel had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Anteaters (2-4). Stephanie Whitmore had 25 points, including seven three-pointers for the Ladyjacks (3-3).
In another nonconference women’s basketball game:
Cal State Fullerton 65, San Jose State 51--Andrea Thieme scored 12 points and Natascha Stokely had 11 and Nieshia Cleveland had 10 for the visiting Titans (2-4).
