Probers Seek Clues to Fireworks Blast
On the back dirt roads of Osseo, Mich., federal investigators began picking through the debris of a devastating fireworks explosion that likely killed seven people. Although six women and one man were feared dead, they are now officially listed as missing. Identification will take some time, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said. The blast, which could be heard up to 20 miles away, sent a huge plume of smoke in the air as it leveled the Independence Professional Fireworks building. Osseo, population 1,000, is a farming community about 90 miles southwest of Detroit. After explosives experts deemed the 160-acre site safe, cadaver dogs were sent in to search for remains. Officials said determining the cause could take a week to 10 days.
