Bird Feat--Both early birds and night owls can help with the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count, which gathers information on populations and migration. On Saturday, the South Coast Audubon Society will search 10 areas, including Camp Pendleton, San Juan Creek, Doheny State Beach, Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park and the Rancho Mission Viejo Land Conservancy. Everyone, from novices to experienced bird watchers, can participate. For information, call Stephen Stanton at (949) 661-7525.

Sea & Sage Audubon Society will conduct its counts Dec. 20 and Jan. 3. The count next Sunday includes Irvine Lake, Irvine Regional Park, Modjeska and Harding canyons, Silverado Canyon and Lemon Heights, among others. The coastal count Jan. 3 covers Bolsa Chica, William R. Mason Regional Park, Mile Square Regional Park, Upper Newport Bay and older areas within Santa Ana. Gifts of Nature--Take a break from the malls and spend next Sunday at the Oak Canyon Nature Center in Anaheim Hills crafting decorations and gifts from natural materials. The workshop is from 1 to 3 p.m. and costs $6.50. Projects are geared to children 7 to 12 years old, but all ages are welcome. The nature center is at 6700 E. Walnut Canyon Road, just off Nohl Ranch Road near the Anaheim Hills Golf Course. Information: (714) 998-8380.

Eyeing the Sky--Look for lions, bears and hunters formed by the stars during astronomy night at the Rancho Mission Viejo Land Conservancy from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $8 for adults; $6 for children 8 and up. The event is not recommended for younger children. Reservations: (949) 489-9778. The land conservancy is five miles east of San Juan Capistrano.
