The Supreme People’s Court dismissed an appeal by former Beijing Mayor Chen Xitong of a 16-year jail sentence for corruption and dereliction of duty, New China News Agency reported. Chen, 68, was the most senior Chinese official to be toppled in a corruption scandal since the 1949 Communist revolution. His original sentence was handed down by the Beijing People’s High Court last month. Chen was detained in 1995 after the suicide of his protege, Vice Mayor Wang Baosen, who was under investigation for corruption. Chen was purged from the Communist Party’s Politburo that same year.
