Family Violence

In “High-Tech Protection for Victims of Abuse” (Sept. 19), a “panic button” was described, along with other devices, for protection, in this case, of a battered woman in fear of her life. Why is it always left up to the victim to find means of protection?
Family violence would greatly diminish if each local newspaper published a list of abusers. The name, city and date of occurrence.
Once police have been summoned, and evidence is seen, a report must be taken, whether or not the victim presses charges.
Spousal and child abuse continues because abusers feel confident that it will be “kept in the family.” What abusers fear most is exposure. And yet, our system continues to protect the identity of batterers and child abusers, unless, or until, it ends tragically.
