No. 8 Laguna Hills Holds Off El Toro in Tennis
Laguna Hills, ranked eighth in the county, was able to hold off unranked El Toro to win, 11-7, in nonleague girls’ tennis Wednesday.
Jessica Prause, the Hawks’ No. 1 singles player, was instrumental in Laguna Hills’ victory as she easily won her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. El Toro’s Robin Rimland, the Chargers’ No. 1 singles player, was able to win only one game.
Laguna Hills improved to 4-1; El Toro dropped to 4-2.
In other nonleague girls’ tennis:
Newport Harbor 10, Capistrano Valley 8--Newport Harbor’s Erika Palm and Amanda Collopy came back from a 2-5 deficit to defeat Heather Friesen and Jessica Joseph, 7-5, as the Sailors upset fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley.
Newport Harbor led the match, 9-8, before the doubles match. Had Friesen and Joseph won, Capistrano Valley (4-1) would have tied the score 9-9 and won the match on total games.
Palm and Collopy won their remaining sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Newport Harbor’s No. 1 doubles team, Audra Adams and Brooke Taylor swept their sets, 6-1, 6-1, 7-5. The Sailors, ranked seventh, are 4-2.
Sophomore Leigh Ann Merryman swept in singles for Capistrano Valley, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.
Tustin 10, Orange 8--Tustin’s No. 2 doubles team of Myle Nguyen and Amber Vann swept, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, helping Tustin edge Orange in a nonleague match.
Unranked Tustin improved to 6-0.
Tiller singles player Eleanor Isenhour swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:
Santa Margarita 24, El Toro 34--A second-, third- and fifth-place finish were the difference in fifth-ranked Santa Margarita’s victory over No. 4 El Toro.
Danny Lee of El Toro won the race in 15 minutes 51 seconds. Brandon Vonguenthner of Santa Margarita finished second in 16:21 on the three-mile course at O’Neill Regional Park.
In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:
El Toro 25, Santa Margarita 32--Although Dani Rope of Santa Margarita took first, but it wasn’t enough for Santa Margarita. El Toro took third, fourth and fifth. Rope won in 19:24 at O’Neill Park. El Toro, ranked seventh in the county, is 1-0 in league.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Woodbridge 3, Foothill 1--Erin Danduran had eight kills to lead Woodbridge to a 15-9, 15-10, 15-12 victory.
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
Aliso Niguel 13, Westminster 4--Jay Moorhead scored seven goals and Garrett Cornish had 24 saves for Aliso Niguel (4-4).
Orange 18, Savanna 15--Paco Preciado’s game-high 10 goals was the difference in the Panther’s (2-5) victory.
Santa Margarita 16, Canyon 5--After a successful showing last weekend at the Long Beach Millikan tournament, Andrew Jensen continues to be impressive for No. 4 Santa Margarita, scoring six goals in Wednesday’s victory. Santa Margarita (6-1) plays today in the first day of the South Coast tournament.
