Orange Lutheran took advantage of an on-side kick Friday night--the other team’s.

Troy tried one after tying the score late in the third quarter. The Lancers recovered it and drove for the go-ahead touchdown and a 21-14 victory at Fullerton High.

Pats Sims’ two-yard touchdown run with 10 minutes 56 seconds remaining in the game capped a drive that started at midfield three minutes earlier after the Warriors’ on-side attempt.

Orange Lutheran (1-0-1) then stopped Troy quarterback Stephen Muther a yard short on fourth and three with six minutes remaining, and the Lancers were able to run the clock out.

Orange Lutheran led at the half, 7-6, thanks to Dee Meza, who gained 70 yards in seven carries.

Meza then set up the Lancers’ next score when he intercepted Muther’s pass at midfield. On third and one at the Warrior 33, Orange Lutheran faked a dive over the middle then handed to Meza, who sprinted down the left sideline for a 14-6 lead.

Troy (0-2) answered with a 16-play, 65-yard drive that was kept alive by a roughing the kicker penalty at midfield. The Warriors then marched inside the five and Todd Frazier ran in from two yards for his second touchdown.

Adrian Vargas, who rushed for 146 yards in 26 carries, then ran in the two-point conversion to tie the score, 14-14, with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.
