Seraphs Leave Bell-Jeff in Sour Mood

Utilizing a significant advantage in size and skill, St. Bonaventure High overwhelmed Bell-Jeff, 56-0, Thursday night at Ventura High.

St. Bonaventure’s Jesse Kirk, a junior transfer from Bell-Jeff, rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns in 13 carries, and Bebop Lopez rushed for 28 yards and three touchdowns in eight carries.

The Seraphs (1-1) produced 386 yards of offense while Bell-Jeff (0-2) could manage only seven and did not throw a pass from its double-wing formation.

David Barsumyan had 36 yards in 14 carries, including a six-yard run that was the Guards’ longest gain.

The lopsided score led to some hard feelings for Bell-Jeff’s coaches, who screamed insults when Chris Lombardo, St. Bonaventure’s starting quarterback, completed five of six passes for 77 yards in the fourth quarter.

The players shook hands after the game but the coaching staffs did not.

“I didn’t enjoy the game,” said Kirk, who started for Bell-Jeff last season. “It wasn’t cool at all. All those guys are my friends.”

Things don’t figure to get any better next week for Bell-Jeff, which plays Paraclete. The Spirits beat St. Bonaventure, 42-16, last week.

The Guards, who have only 19 players on their roster, trailed, 22-0, after one quarter and 36-0 at halftime.

Bell-Jeff picked up its only first down late in the third quarter. St. Bonaventure had 20 first downs.

Lombardo, who completed only six of 16 passes last week and threw three interceptions, completed 14 of 21 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown against the Guards.

Mike Chase caught four passes for 37 yards and a touchdown, and Rob Richardson caught four passes for 54 yards.
