Jimmie Irving

I just finished speaking with the post office, more or less begging for the return of our mailman, the Rev. Jimmie Irving, and there he is big as life on the front page of the Metro section (“Change of Address,” Sept. 11).

There has been a large void left in our neighborhood since the new route change just a month ago. After knowing this gentleman for 21 years, I can honestly say he has never said a harsh word toward anyone, he has always taken the time to say hello and is completely genuine and sincere, a rare person indeed. I tried petitions, I tried letters, I tried calling, and now I have been reduced to begging!

Irving is worth it, and on behalf of all us on the old route, we want him back! Please.

What a thoroughly inspiring story about Irving.

I live on Bagley Avenue in Beverlywood. Jimmie is not my mail carrier. However, I know Jimmie. On Saturday mornings when my wife and I walk home from religious services, Jimmie would always shower us with Sabbath greetings. I miss that smiling face. I may now have to find another route to walk home so I can see Jimmie again. Jimmie Irving, you are just one fine American.

What a lovely story about Irving, the “mail-carrying minister.” Would that we all could deliver such friendship and love across every sort of human dividing line.
