Young Acquired From Avalanche

The Mighty Ducks added scoring depth Wednesday by acquiring Scott Young, a versatile right wing, from the Colorado Avalanche for a third-round pick in the 1998 draft.

Young, 29, is expected to play with rookie center Espen Knutsen and veteran winger Tomas Sandstrom on the second line. He did not arrive in time to play in the Ducks’ 5-0 exhibition victory over the Vancouver Canucks at the Pond.

“He’s a checker who can score,” Coach Pierre Page said. “We need checkers who can score. He’s in the 20- to 30-goal range. He has a lot of speed. It’s a big boost for us.”

Young had 18 goals and 37 points in 72 games for the Avalanche last season. He played on U.S. Olympic teams in 1988 and ’92 and was a member of Stanley Cup championship teams in Pittsburgh in 1991 and Colorado in 1996. He also played for the Quebec Nordiques when Page was coach and general manager there in the early 1990s.

“Now, we need only one more bit of good news: No. 9,” Teemu Selanne said, referring to restricted free agent Paul Kariya, still unsigned and not in camp. “I think with [Young], we’ll have two good lines. Last year, we didn’t have enough power on the second and third lines.”

General Manager Jack Ferreira said he’s through talking to reporters about his attempts to re-sign Kariya. “I’ll have no comment until the deal is done,” he said.

The Ducks made a second offer to Kariya, but team President Tony Tavares refused to give the details Monday. The first offer, presented in July, was $25 million for five years.
