Stoner Leads Wyoming Past Iowa State, 56-10
Iowa State may have had problems with turnovers in its 56-10 nonconference loss to Wyoming Saturday at Laramie, Wyo., but Coach Dan McCarney didn’t stop there in criticizing the play of his team.
“The loss is humiliating, it’s embarrassing for the players, the coaches and for the whole football team,†he said. “Every phase was bad, and I take responsibility, I’m the head coach. When you play as poorly as we did, execute as poorly as we did and have as many giveaways as we did today, it starts at the top.â€
Wyoming forced the Cyclones (0-2) into four fumbles and had two interceptions, with the Cowboys (1-1) converting four of those turnovers into touchdowns.
Jay Stoner, who shared the Wyoming quarterback duties with Jeremy Silcox, had two touchdown passes.
Air Force 41, Rice 12--Blane Morgan passed for two touchdowns and ran for two as Air Force quickly quieted a huge Rice crowd in an Western Athletic Conference game at Houston.
The Falcons (2-0, 1-0) gave Coach Fisher DeBerry, now in his 14th season, his 100th career victory, making him the 16th active Division I coach to reach the century mark.
Rice (0-1) drew 53,145 fans, the largest crowd in 13 years.
The Air Force secondary intercepted five Rice passes--one short of a school record--with each starter in the defensive backfield getting at least one.
New Mexico 61, New Mexico State 24--Quarterback Graham Leigh ran for three touchdowns and passed for three more for the Lobos at Albuquerque.
New Mexico (2-0) defeated New Mexico State (0-2) for the 19th time in the last 21 years.
Leigh had scoring passes of 42 and 22 yards to Pascal Volz and scored off the option on runs of six and three yards in the first half.
Leigh, a former starter at Pacific, who transferred to New Mexico last year after the Tigers dropped football, also had a 12-yard scoring pass to tight end Jonathan Burroughs and a 12-yard touchdownrun in the third quarter.
Baylor 37, Fresno State 35--Michael Pittsman’s second touchdown of the game, on a five-yard run, brought Fresno within 30-28 early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs missed on a two-point conversion and the Bears escaped with a victory at Fresno.
Baylor’s Anthony Overstreet scored his second touchdown of the game on a 18-yard run with 6:27 left to make it 37-28, and Fresno (1-1) scored again on an 18-yard pass from Bill Volek to Vince Branstetter with 4:17 left. But Baylor (1-1) ran out the clock.
Utah 27, Louisville 21--Juan Johnson ran for two touchdowns and the Utes (1-1) held the Cardinals (0-2) to 15 rushing yards in a nonconference game at Louisville.
