Brush Fire Burns 75 Acres Near Castaic
CASTAIC — A swift-moving wildfire burned about 75 acres of Angeles National Forest south of Pyramid Lake on Wednesday before winds calmed and firefighters could gain the upper hand on the blaze, authorities said.
No one was injured and no structures were threatened. The fire was 60% contained Wednesday night and expected to be fully contained by 6 a.m. today, said Linda Christman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service.
About 300 fire personnel fought the blaze, which started about 3:45 p.m. north of Cherry Canyon, west of the Golden State Freeway. Winds of 25 mph fanned the flames and the fire quickly spread southwest. Water- and flame-retardant-dropping aircraft and U.S. Forest Service and Los Angeles County firefighters battled the flames.
The California Highway Patrol shut down two lanes of the southbound Golden State Freeway, beginning at about 5 p.m., though the closure didn’t appear to seriously affect traffic, said CHP Officer Shirley Gaines.
