The Rev. Bernice King, daughter of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., will give a speech in Ventura next week to raise awareness of racial issues in the county.

King will speak at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Doubletree Hotel at the City Impact annual fund-raising dinner.

“We will be inspired and challenged in the many areas of our lives, to go beyond rhetoric with the task of race reconciliation and working with at-risk youth,†said Betty Alvarez Ham, executive director of Oxnard-based City Impact, which does outreach programs for at-risk youth and families.

Bernice King has continued her father’s crusade for racial freedom, justice and reconciliation. At the dinner, she will discuss her book, “Hard Questions, Heart Answers,†which looks at persistent racism in American society. She will also discuss the continuing challenge of making her father’s dream a reality.

King made his famous “I Have a Dream†speech in 1963 and serves as the inspiration for the foundation of programs such as City Impact, Ham said.

In addition to Bernice King, the Solid Rock Voices of Praise and soloist Clonnie Clendenan of Fresno will perform at the dinner.
