The teen-scream movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” held on to the No. 1 spot at the weekend movie box office, but “Boogie Nights” stole the show in limited release, industry analysts said Sunday.
Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s film about the pornographic movie industry came in at No. 12 with an estimated gross of $1.9 million, but its $15,300 per-location average was nearly three times the $5,190 average for the No. 1 picture. “Boogie Nights,” a New Line Cinema release starring Mark Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds, will open in wide release this weekend.
The past weekend was good for Sony, whose Columbia and TriStar studios had three of the top five films: “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which grossed an estimated $13.1 million in its second weekend; “Seven Years in Tibet,” in fourth with $4.8 million; and “Gattaca,” fifth, $4.4 million.
Warner Bros.’ “The Devil’s Advocate,” starring Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves, placed second with $10.3 million in its second week of release, followed by Paramount Pictures’ “Kiss the Girls,” which took in $5.2 million in its fourth week.
Other films making the top 10 were Paramount’s “Fairytale--A True Story,” which placed sixth, with $3.4 million; that studio’s Kevin Kline comedy “In & Out,” $2.9 million; 20th Century Fox’s “Soul Food,” $2.2 million; “A Life Less Ordinary,” the new Danny Boyle film from Fox, $2.1 million, and Warner Bros.’ “L.A. Confidential,” $2 million.
All weekend box-office grosses are estimates; final figures are to be released today.
