Rigley Leads Waves Over No. 5 Florida

Samantha Rigley, a junior guard from Alemany High, had 18 points and six rebounds to help Pepperdine upset fifth-ranked Florida, 65-51, Saturday in a women’s basketball game at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

Freshman Liz Paulson came off the bench to score 10 of her 13 points in the second half for the Waves. Nikki Fields added 11 points and six rebounds and Jenny Frank scored 10.

Pepperdine (3-1) pulled away from the Gators (4-1) with a 15-4 run in the final 6:19.

Tiffany Travis led Florida with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Murriel Page had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

The Gators outrebounded the Waves, 38-31, but Pepperdine made 10 three-point baskets. Florida made only two of eight three-point shots.

Florida trailed, 26-23, at halftime, but scored the first eight points of the second half. With the Gators leading, 36-30, the Waves went on a 13-5 run to take a 43-41 lead.

In another women’s basketball game:

Iowa 67, Cal State Northridge 56--Edniesha Curry, a freshman guard from Palmdale High, scored 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting, but the rest of the Matadors (0-3) shot 32% (12 for 38) from the field in the Iowa tournament in Iowa City.

Curry made all three of her three-point shots and had five of Northridge’s nine steals.

Amy Herrig had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the No. 18 Hawkeyes (2-2).

MEN’S WATER POLO

USC 10, Pepperdine 9--The top-ranked Waves were outscored, 4-1, in the fourth quarter and were eliminated in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Marko Pintaric’s third goal of the game broke a 9-9 tie with 2:41 to play, putting USC (18-6) in the championship game against Stanford (19-6), a 5-4 winner over California, at 2:30 p.m. today.

Pepperdine (23-2), which was 2-0 against USC in the regular season, had taken a 9-7 lead with 6:43 left following goals by Jeremy Pope and Alan Herrmann.

The Waves hope to gain an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament Friday and next Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Chapman 80, Cal Lutheran 75--Cory Johnson had 21 points and Mike Dulaney 18 but the Kingsmen (1-2) lost at Chapman (3-1).
