3 Football Coaches Die in Crash
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — Three high school football coaches died Thursday morning when their convertible sport utility vehicle ran off an isolated desert road in Riverside County and rolled several times, officials said.
All three men were wearing their seat belts at the time of the 3:30 a.m. accident, although the force of the crash apparently shook the driver loose from his seat and ejected him into the desert, said Cathedral City Police Lt. Greg Savelli.
“Our investigation indicates that speed may have been a factor in this [accident], based on the point of rest of this vehicle and how it went off roadway,†Savelli said.
The victims were identified as Cathedral City High School head freshman football coach Steve Wilson, 44, of Palm Springs; assistant coach Eric Metz, 25, of Cathedral City; and assistant coach Bob Grenville, 35, of Desert Hot Springs.
