Lakewood Artesia (5-5) vs. Laguna Hills (9-1)

7 P.M. FRIDAY MISSION VIEJO HIGH

Laguna Hills was the third-seeded team last year too, and didn’t make it past the first round. This year’s team, however, has a more diverse offense with Tom Banning and Saia Makakaufaki playing a bigger role and taking some pressure off Jones. The Hawks are not facing nearly the test they did in last year’s first round. Artesia is no Pacifica, but the Pioneers are dangerous. They defeated playoff-bound Bellflower and nearly upset North Torrance (8-2). “Our defensive strength is our front eight,†Artesia Coach Frank Mazzotta said. “We’re not big, but we’re tough and we play the run pretty well.â€
