Murder Trial Goes to Jury in WWII Flashback Case
The Superior Court murder trial of Dick Keech, who says that a flashback to his experience as a prisoner of war during World War II led him to shoot his son-in-law to death, went to the jury Tuesday.
Keech, 77, killed Nick Candy, 47, on May 21, 1996, when Candy came to the Keech house for a visit with his young son, Martin.
During a trial that began in September, Keech said he shot Nick Candy in self-defense. He testified that he believed Nick Candy was about to beat him, that he flashed back to his POW years and that he thought he had no choice but to shoot the younger man.
Prosecutors call Keech a liar. They told jurors that the killing was a calculated murder.
