City Breaks Tradition by Playing Day After Thanksgiving

In a departure from previous years, the City Section will play its quarterfinal football playoff games on Friday, Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving.
The section had traditionally played the day before Thanksgiving.
Teams alive in the playoffs can hold a voluntary practice on Thursday.
FOOTBALL
Heads or tails? Notre Dame, St. Francis and Serra tied for the Mission League title with 4-1 records.
Because St. Francis beat Notre Dame, which beat Serra, which beat St. Francis, a series of coins flips done Friday morning has determined the league’s seeds for the Southern Section Division III playoffs.
Notre Dame goes in as the No. 1 seed, St. Francis at No. 2 and Serra at No. 3.
SOCCER
Net-finder: Jason Cropley, a former La Canada standout, scored the winning goal Friday night to lift the Maryland men’s soccer team to 4-2 upset of top-seeded Duke (15-5) in the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Orlando, Fla.
Cropley, a sophomore forward, assisted on the Terrapins’ final goal.
SOFTBALL
Signing: Jennifer Durost, a second baseman for Highland High, has signed a national letter of intent with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Durost batted .313 as a junior for the Bulldogs.
