Owners Told to Clean Up Pets’ Acts at Dog Beach
Pet owners who use popular Dog Beach are forewarned that City Council members are considering a “zero tolerance†policy regarding violations of dog waste and leash regulations.
The Community Services Commission this week unanimously approved a 90-day pilot program that would fine dog owners up to $160 for not picking up animal droppings or not keeping their pets on a leash. The City Council will consider the plan Monday.
Under the program, signs, baggy dispensers and trash cans will be installed along a half-mile stretch that runs south of Golden West Street, known as Dog Beach. A park ranger would enforce the ordinance during the morning, evenings and weekends.
“This summer we noticed a large number of people were not picking up after their dogs and were not keeping them on a leash,†said Ron Hagan, director of community services. “If people do not comply with the measure we may be forced to close this popular spot.â€
The pilot program is slated to begin in January and run through March.
