Irvine OKs Plan to Widen Culver Drive

IRVINE — Plans to widen Culver Drive to four lanes from Campus Drive to Bonita Canyon Drive were approved by the City Council on Tuesday night.
The cost is $9.5 million, which includes about $5 million for the nearly five acres UC Irvine would give up for the project.
However, the project is contingent on the city getting outside funding from unspecified sources. Council members said the city will not pay for the project.
About 300 residents packed the council chambers, overwhelmingly voicing their support for a plan that gives residents 100 feet of setback from Culver Drive as opposed to a plan that would give them 55 feet. The first plan passed.
The issue has been discussed for six years.
