An off-duty Los Angeles police officer shot and killed one of two would-be robbers in Hawthorne on Monday, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. at 136th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the officer was the victim of a robbery attempt or witnessed a crime being committed, sheriff’s officials said.
The incident occurred near an intersection with an automated teller machine at a Wells Fargo bank branch and an auto parts store, according to sheriff’s officials.
The officer, whose name was not released, shot one of the men, who died later at a local hospital. The other alleged robber was in custody Monday night, sheriff’s deputies said.
