Fred Haney, the Angels’ first general manager, dies of a heart attack. Haney, 79, served as general manager for eight years, beginning in 1960.
* Silent film legend Gertrude Astor dies of a stroke on her 90th birthday. During her 50-year career, Astor appeared in hundreds of films, including “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” and “Camille.”
* Quote of the day: “California apparently has become the breadbasket for candidates seeking campaign funds”-- Lorelei Kinder, executive director of the GOP State Central Committee, complaining about Sen. Strom Thurmond’s attempt to raise funds in California for his South Carolina campaign.
