Today’s Election

Voters in the Orange Unified School District will go to the polls today to fill four seats on the Board of Education and to give their opinion on the board’s decision to dismantle bilingual education.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The district covers Orange and Villa Park and parts of Anaheim, Garden Grove and Santa Ana.
Incumbents Martin Jacobson, James Fearns and Rick Ledesma face challenges from Gisela Meier, Linda Davis, Kathy Ward, Bea Gonzalez, J. Carolan Smyth III and Robert L. Douglas. No incumbent is running for the fourth seat, which is being contested by William G. Vasquez and Terri Sargeant.
Although candidates must run in one of seven voting districts, all voters cast ballots in each race.
Voters are being asked whether they support the board’s decision to cease all native-language instruction, known as bilingual education, and replace it with a program of English immersion. The initiative is advisory and is not binding on the school board.
