By All Means, Keep NFL Franchises on the Move

Good for you, Al Davis! Way to stand up to the league and accuse it of extortion against the Rams during their move from Los Angeles to St. Louis [Oct. 23].

Eternal vigilance like this is needed to keep some people in line. Next thing you know, owners will start extorting money from the fans by charging them ridiculously large sums of money just for the right to buy a season ticket! With good ol’ Al Davis around, that will never happen.

If I owned a football team, and I wanted to make Los Angeles my home, imagine my horror at being told by Mr. Ridley-Thomas that the only place I was allowed to put that team was at the Coliseum! I would recommend that Mr. Ridley-Thomas lease the Coliseum for $1 and put a team there himself.

Ever since the Raiders and Rams left L.A., the debate about the return of the NFL to Los Angeles has focused on the wrong issue, where to build the stadium.

The only reason the City Council has anything to say in the matter is because they are dangling my wallet in front of the NFL. What matters is whether or not tax money is used to build the stadium. NFL teams (with the notable exception of the Packers) are privately owned. Under that scenario, build where you will, but use your own money. Only if revenues from football games go into city coffers, and directly reduce our taxes, should our money be used for anything. The only other exception should be if we (like Green Bay) owned the team.

Mr. Ridley-Thomas . . . get your hands out of my pocket!
