The latest porcelain dinnerware collection by Laguna Beach artist Denise Ford is not garden-variety china.
Helen’s Garden is a vibrant collection, with calla lilies, chrysanthemums and tulips in full bloom. The bright, bold colors are achieved by using a specially formulated palette of 15 colors. An in-glaze process, which is fired at a higher temperature than standard porcelain glazes, gives the pieces a high gloss.
The dishwasher-safe dinnerware can be used in the microwave. All of the glazes are environmentally safe.
Helen’s Garden was named after the mother of Ford’s partner Cathy Chung, also of Laguna Beach. The company formerly sold their china under the name Glazed Donuts.
A five-piece place setting is available for $164. Open stock pieces range from $36 for a salad and dessert plate to $250 for a teapot.

Eagle Roofing Products and American Sheet Extrusion Corp. have introduced a new cedar shake replica that is flame-resistant, lightweight and easy to install.
The Genesis roofing system is made with NORYL resin, a thermoplastic manufactured by GE Plastics. The system has the beauty and charm of traditional cedar shake, but it resists wind, hail, rain and extreme temperatures. It also retains its color for many years.
The Genesis system carries a Class A fire rating. The timbers char and self-extinguish when ignited.

Move over Chatty Cathy, Barbie and Co. and those little Cabbage Patch folks.
The real dolls are coming to town.
On Sunday, the National Institute of American Doll Artists will be displaying some of the world’s finest dolls, from whimsical to the realistic, at the Hyatt Regency Alicante in Anaheim.
The aim of the institute is to show the intricate detail and craftsmanship that go into making the dolls, which can cost as much as $10,000.
More than 400 recent works will be shown from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the hotel. Among the California artists showing their dolls will be Ken Von Essen of Redondo Beach; Floyd Bell of Los Angeles; Patti Hale of Vista; Martha Armstrong-Hand of Cambria; and George S. Stuart of Ojai.
Admission to the exhibit is $5. The hotel is at Harbor and Chapman in Anaheim.
