Both Sides Rest in Gigante Trial

Attorneys for accused mob boss Vincent “The Chin” Gigante rested their defense of the reputed head of the Genovese crime family without calling a single witness in his murder and racketeering trial in New York City. But they did present statements made at a 1986 trial in which a federal prosecutor referred to Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno, and not Gigante, as the head of the New York-based organized crime family. Gigante, facing a 21-count murder and racketeering indictment, is accused of ordering the killing of seven people and conspiring to kill three others, allegedly to avenge breaches of Mafia protocol, such as unauthorized slayings. The prosecution rested its case earlier in the day.
