Ervine, Neely to Start in CISL All-Star Game

Dale Ervine and Doug Neely have been named to the starting lineup for the Western Division squad for the CISL All-Star game, the league announced Friday.

The All-Star game is July 29 at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Ervine, a forward who also serves as Splash coach, and Neely, a midfielder/defender, will be joined in the starting lineup by Seattle’s Juan De La O and Dick McCormick and Sacramento’s Iain Fraser and Jon Parry. Splash forward Bernie Lilavois was also selected. The West is coached by Seattle’s Fernando Clavijo.

Starters for the East team are: Dallas goalkeeper Antonio Cortes, Dallas forward Tatu, Monterrey defender Genoni Martinez, Dallas midfielder David Doyle, Indiana defensive midfielder Mariano Bollella, Houston offensive midfielder Paul Dougherty.

Also, the Splash waived Andy Strouse, 27, a forward who played six games and had one goal and a block.

Dave Bohannon of Garden Grove beat Michael Martines of Salt Lake City, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinal round to advance to the semifinals in the men’s 50 singles at the U.S. Tennis Assn. National Men’s 50 and 55 hard court championships Friday at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

In the men’s 50 doubles, Bohannon, along with Dennis Trout of Solvang, defeated Dean Schlobohn of Moraga and Greg Shephard of Mission Viejo, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals.

Other Orange County double teams advancing in 50 doubles were Robyn Ray and Ken Stuart of Newport Beach; Steve Field and Frank Zebot of Laguna Beach and Bob Duesler of Newport Beach and Hank Leichtfried of Irvine.

In the men’s 55 doubles, Jim Howie of Dana Point and Lenny Lindborg of Laguna Beach won their quarterfinal match to advance, as did Bob Duesler of Newport Beach and Leichtfried.

Pacifica’s Amanda Freed has been named first-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn.

Freed, a pitcher, went 20-0 with a 0.23 earned-run average and a Southern Section-tying five perfect games. She was The Times Orange County player of the year.

Freed’s teammate, third baseman Toni Mascarenas was a second-team selection.

Play continues today at the fifth Summer Hoops Tournament for girls’ basketball players at Estancia High, Irvine Valley College and Concordia University.

The finals are set for Sunday. Daily admission is $3, $2 for students; seniors and children under 12 free.

Former Esperanza and University wrestling coach Steve Stewart will become coach at Villa Park High, said Frank Becker, Villa Park’s boys’ athletic director.

Stewart, who coached at Indio last season, replaced Michael Salotti, who resigned in February. Stewart will teach science and also coach freshman football.

Becker also announced Bryan Shoup, who was an assistant boys’ soccer coach at Esperanza last year, will take over as head coach for the Villa Park boys’ team. Shoup, who will be student teaching at Villa Park, replaces Fidel Alatorre, who resigned.

The Orange County Diggers (0-1) host the San Diego Spikers (1-0) at noon Sunday at Newport Beach in a National Grass Volleyball League game. The women’s professional four-person league continues weekend play through its championship final, Aug. 23 at UC San Diego.

The California Waterman and Waterwomen Championships will be held at the San Clemente Pier today and Sunday.

Today’s events begin with the 10-kilometer paddleboard, surf ski and kayak race, which begins at 8:30 a.m. There will be nine other events today with the last one starting at 4:30 p.m.

Sunday’s events begin with a biathlon (one mile swim, five K run) at 9 a.m. and ends with a 500-meter ocean swim.
