Lakeside’s Back Nine Is Par Four the Course

Players in the Southern California Golf Assn. amateur championship face an interesting challenge on the 6,534-yard, par-70 Lakeside Country Club course in Toluca Lake. There are only two par-five holes, both on the front nine. There are eight par fours and a par three on the back nine.
Lakeside has hosted the SCGA three other times. George Von Elm won the last of his three championships there in 1927, Smiley Quick won the 1940 event and John W. Dawson won the second of his four SCGA titles at Lakeside in 1944.
The list of past and present Lakeside members contains some familiar names: W.C. Fields, Bing Crosby, Oliver Hardy, Howard Hughes and Bob Hope, whose wife Dolores has the distinction of finishing second in the women’s club championship five times without a title.
SCGA spokesman Bob Thomas says that the course will play tough, with four-inch primary rough and fast greens.
“They’ll be as quick as we can get them without damaging the course,” Thomas said. “The rough will be a significant issue. If you don’t drive it in the fairway, you will not win this tournament.”
Thomas said he expects par to be a good score.
Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth is scheduled to play, and after losing Thursday in the third round of match play while trying to defend his U.S. Public Links championship, he might make his 8:04 a.m. tee time today.
The SCGA had not heard from Hogarth at press time.
Hogarth gained an exemption into the field after finishing as medalist in the California Amateur Championship last month. Because he is exempt, an alternate will not take his place if he does not play.
SCGA Mid-Amateur champion and three-time SCGA Amateur champion Craig Steinberg will tee off with state Amateur champion Jason Gore at 8:04 a.m. on the first tee.
Also in their group is Mark Johnson of Helendale, the 1996 state Amateur champion.
Hogarth will play with recent U.S. Open participant Jason Semelsberger of Newhall, a former Hart High standout who attends UCLA.
