SAN FERNANDO — A 4-year-old boy drowned in the family’s backyard swimming pool, a Fire Department spokesman said Friday.
Daniel Zapata was found face down at the bottom of the pool at a house on Newton Street just before 7 p.m. Thursday, the spokesman said.
The boy’s parents told authorities the boy may have been out of their sight for 10 to 30 minutes before he was found in the pool.
The boy’s mother tried to revive her son by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation while on the phone with a 911 operator. A San Fernando police officer also attempted CPR but could not revive the child, who had no pulse when paramedics arrived.
Daniel was flown by helicopter to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was pronounced dead. The Los Angeles County coroner listed the cause of death as accidental drowning.
