Mike Tyson

Kudos to Bill Plaschke for his excellent article (June 30). Mike Tyson does need to disappear forever. He was not only unsportsmanlike, he committed mayhem and should have been arrested.

My father-in-law boxed for the University of Michigan in the 1930s. He loved the sport. I’m glad he’s not around today to see its decline. I have to ask, is boxing a sport? If it is there can be no room for the likes of Tyson in it.

I was appalled by the footage on the news of Tyson biting Evander Holyfield’s ears. Mind you, I hate boxing anyway, but this only reconfirmed my opinion of the sport, if you can call it that. To me it is more like a cock or dog fight! I totally agree with Plaschke’s article. Tyson should be banned from boxing altogether!

How can so many people be shocked, surprised and outraged when an unrepentant, convicted rapist demonstrates that he hasn’t the slightest idea of what good sportsmanship and fair play are all about?

The double standard continues: A convicted rapist is allowed to return to the ring and box. But when he bites off a part of a male fighter’s ear, he is to be “thrown out of the ring and boxing.” If it was painful and awful for the boxer, just imagine how awful it must have been for the woman he raped.

How can we now act horrified at Tyson’s animalistic behavior when we, as a society, have done everything possible to exploit and glorify this barbaric sport? Boxing to me conveys an ignominious lack of respect not only for human life but more importantly, human dignity.
