3 Imprisoned 4 Years After Rape Trial
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Three former high school athletes convicted in 1993 of sexually assaulting a mentally retarded girl in 1989 have been imprisoned after losing a long battle to overturn their convictions. The men, now college graduates, were teenagers in Glen Ridge, N.J., when they lured the victim to a basement and sexually assaulted her with a broom and a baseball bat as schoolmates watched. An appeals court recently threw out the most serious charge of first-degree aggravated sexual assault but let stand conspiracy convictions. Christopher Archer, 25, and Kevin Scherzer, 26, were sentenced to up to 15 years and could be released within three years. Kyle Scherzer, Kevin’s twin, was sentenced to seven years and could be free in 10 months.
