Zepeda’s Late Heroics Give Century a Title
Mike Zepeda grabbed Hardy Fatu’s airball and laid it in as the clock expired, giving Century a 38-37 victory over Calvary Chapel in the championship game of the Century Holiday Classic on Tuesday.
Joe Ortiz had just given Calvary Chapel (11-5) a one-point lead with a tip-in with eight seconds remaining.
Terrail Zoller had 15 points and nine rebounds and Zepeda had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Centurions (11-3).
In the Brea Olinda tournament:
Brea Olinda 71, Cerritos Gahr 67--Brea Olinda outscored Gahr, 27-19, in the third quarter to win its second consecutive Brea Olinda tournament title. Chris McMillian scored 26 points for the Wildcats (13-1) and teammate Reid Carlson scored 17. Jeff Mason had 11 points and 19 rebounds for Brea Olinda. Gahr is 9-5.
La Mirada 65, El Toro 62--Mark Wulfemeyer scored 21 points for the second consecutive game for El Toro (9-5), which finished eighth in the tournament. El Toro led, 38-30, at the half, but was held to only eight fourth-quarter points.
In the Canyon tournament:
No. 7 Canyon 52, El Dorado 50--Canyon’s Brad Evans scored 17 points as the Comanches won the tournament championship. Evans was named to the all-tournament team, along with teammates Roger Hogan, Ali Goodman and Drew Gaulden.
Gaulden scored 16 points and was named the tournament MVP.
Mike Gartner scored 22 points for El Dorado.
Loara 72, Lakewood Mayfair 65--Herbert Gracia scored 27 points and handed out five assists for Loara (11-3) in the third-place game.
In the Century tournament:
Sunny Hills 62, Mission Viejo 57--Bim Okunrinboye scored nine of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as Sunny Hills (8-7) outscored Mission Viejo, 24-18, in the consolation championship. Grady Funk’s steal, followed by a three-point play, gave the Lancers a 60-54 lead.
No. 10 Los Alamitos 72, Villa Park 50--Matt Komer had a game-high 20 points and Ryan Ellis added 17 as the Griffins won the third-place game. Alan Verzani led Villa Park with 18 points.
In the Coast Classic:
Estancia 66, Edison 60--Sam Nelson led all scorers with 31 points for Estancia, which led throughout the game to win the tournament championship. Teammate James Dawkins added 15 points and Daniel Nehrig led Edison with 24 points.
In the Hampton Roads Virginia Beach Classic:
No. 10 Troy 69, Kecoughtan (Va.) 68--Theoren Chaney’s free throw with one second remaining lifted Troy into the championship game against Atlantic Shores, the tournament host and No. 8 team in Virginia. Jerry Inzunza had 25 points and Scott Blake added 19 for Troy.
In the Katella Classic:
No. 6 Katella 75, Bolsa Grande 57--Rob Abercrombie scored 20 points as host Katella won the tournament and ran its undefeated record to 13-0. Duc Nguyen scored 22 points for Bolsa Grande.
In the Mountain View St. Francis Tournament:
University 86, San Luis Obispo 74--Eric Palmer scored 29 points in a third-place victory for University (7-5). Palmer is one-point shy of the all-time scoring mark set by Demitrius Zeigler (1991-1994). Zeigler finished his career with 1,470 points.
Larry Johnson scored 20 points for the Trojans.
