2-Tiered System on Faculty Pay
* In giving the correct figures in regard to full-time faculty salaries, Diana Guerin and G. Nanjundappa of the Fullerton Chapter of the California Faculty Assn. did not mention the plight of the part-time faculty members at Cal State Fullerton (Letters, Nov. 30).
Like most full-time faculty, I teach three courses--this semester, respectively, 80, 63 and 54 students. Except for a four-year hiatus following the passage of Proposition 13, I have been teaching at CSUF since 1975. My contract for the current academic year is for $22,816.80.
There are many similar cases university-wide. In many departments, part-time instructors outnumber the full-time faculty. I agree that CSUF full-time faculty salaries are too low. However, this is a two-tiered system like the one the part-time workers of United Parcel Service endured before their recent successful strike, and CSUF is a public institution, not a corporation. This cries out for public review.
