GROUP SHOT

There’s so many things wrong with the fame and notoriety of the Spice Girls that I just don’t have enough room, time or patience to go into here. My big pet peeve about Calendar’s article on them (“The Life of Spice,� by David Gritten, Dec. 7) is referring to them as a band.

It’s a terminology thing. A band is a conglomeration of musicians who can play instruments together, like the Rolling Stones or Pearl Jam. The Spice Girls are a group, such as the Marvelettes or the Coasters (apologies to them). In a year or so when the hype runs out and everyone realizes they have no talent, then they will assume their rightful place in the history of popular music--selling shoes at a mall next to New Kids on the Block.
