GROUP SHOT
There’s so many things wrong with the fame and notoriety of the Spice Girls that I just don’t have enough room, time or patience to go into here. My big pet peeve about Calendar’s article on them (“The Life of Spice,†by David Gritten, Dec. 7) is referring to them as a band.
It’s a terminology thing. A band is a conglomeration of musicians who can play instruments together, like the Rolling Stones or Pearl Jam. The Spice Girls are a group, such as the Marvelettes or the Coasters (apologies to them). In a year or so when the hype runs out and everyone realizes they have no talent, then they will assume their rightful place in the history of popular music--selling shoes at a mall next to New Kids on the Block.
