Infant Girl Dies After Falling From Swing
YORBA LINDA — An 11-month-old girl died Friday from injuries she suffered on Christmas Day when she fell off a makeshift swing and caught her throat on a strap, police said.
The child, Evelyn Garcia, was found by her mother hanging from a car seat that the family had fashioned into a swing by suspending it from the ceiling with a nylon rope, according to Brea Police Det. Charles Croix. The child apparently tumbled out of the chair and was caught around the neck by a seat strap, Croix said.
Evelyn suffered major brain damage and was removed from life support Friday at Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Orange. Hospital officials said the parents, Luis and Bernardina Garcia, had agreed to donate her organs.
Police Lt. Douglas Dickerson said that the parents had been checking on the baby every few minutes and that their actions did not appear to be reckless.
