Douglas Gets Bell-Jeff Home Free in 74-73 Victory

Ruben Douglas made two free throws with nine seconds left to give Bell-Jeff High a 74-73 victory over Monroe on Friday night in a pool-play game of the Bell-Jeff/La Canada/St. Francis regional tournament.

Douglas had 35 points and seven steals.

Bell-Jeff (6-1) trailed, 34-17, late in the second quarter, but outscored Monroe, 50-26, over the next two quarters to take a 67-60 lead with three minutes remaining.

Monroe countered with a 10-0 run to take a 70-67 lead with less than a minute left before Bell-Jeff rallied again.

Mike West, who had 26 points and 15 rebounds, scored to give Bell-Jeff a 72-71 lead with 25 seconds left, but Damien Ritter hit a shot to give Monroe a 73-72 lead with 15 seconds remaining.

Ritter scored 14 points for Monroe and Victor Hall had 18 for the Vikings.

In other pool-play games at the Bell-Jeff/La Canada/St. Francis regional tournament:

St. John Bosco 66, Burroughs 59--Kevin Koose scored 23 points for the Indians (7-2).

Muir 81, Moorpark 73--Kevin Lawrence had 30 points and 15 rebounds, and Keith Donahue added 14 points for Moorpark (5-3).

Glendale 102, Village Christian 60--Ronald Baghomian and Eddie Karibyan each scored 17 points for the Dynamiters.

Alfred Bagrian added 13 points and Saro Jankozian and Tomik Iranosian each had 12 points for Glendale (5-4).

In the Las Vegas Durango tournament:

Long Branch (N.J.) 69, Harvard-Westlake 61--The Wolverines (6-1) let a four-point lead in the final minute slip away in a first-round game. Russell Lakey had 14 points and Victor Munoz added 13 points and six rebounds for Harvard-Westlake.

Mountain View (Ariz.) 67, Newbury Park 48--The Panthers fell to 7-3 despite 22 points by Daniel Bobik. Mountain View improved to 10-0.

In other games:

St. Bonaventure 50, Flintridge Prep 43--Brandon Duplessie had 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots, and Michael Perez added 10 points and eight assists for the Seraphs (7-3) at St. Bonaventure.

Cleveland 60, Sylmar 53--Brian Smith scored 15 points, Kent Dennis had 13 and Quante Randolph contributed 12 points and six assists for the Cavaliers (8-3) at Cleveland.

Santa Clara 53, Agoura 47--The Saints didn’t take their first lead until five minutes remained at Santa Clara.

Junior forward B.J. Ward scored 24 points for the Saints (2-3). Marcos Helfman scored 13 points and Derek Lepisto had 11 for Agoura.

GIRLS

Buena 68, Eagle Rock 23--Renae Hofmann scored 21 points and Kelly Greathouse had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (6-0) in the pool-play game of the Las Vegas tournament at Cheyenne High.

Royal 62, Camarillo 40--Teresa Russell had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Highlanders (9-1, 2-0) in the Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

North Hollywood 74, Franklin 44--Freshman Richelle Sherman had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Tashean Thomas scored 19 points for the Huskies (9-0), who won their third consecutive game in pool play of the Burroughs tournament.

Burroughs 73, Notre Dame 46--Chantel Jimenez had 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists and JoAanna Garrick had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Indians (8-1) in pool play at the Burroughs tournament.

Paraclete 45, Tehachapi 33--Christine Lambert had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Spirits (6-1) at Paraclete.

Faith Baptist 72, Pacific Hills 23--Janny Ujueta had 16 points and Rachel Greer added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Contenders (5-0, 1-0), who had a 23-0 lead after one quarter of the Delphic League game at Pacific Hills.
