This Story Would Have Been a Real Lou-Lou
Lou Holtz as USC’s football coach?
Isn’t Saddam Hussein available?

I read the story about Lou Holtz and USC and was ready to be outraged until I saw that nobody except Holtz was quoted.
Then I realized that it was most likely a work of fiction.
At least four Times writers, under the guise of analysis, had called for John Robinson to be replaced.
Is it unlikely, then, that the entire Holtz story was fabricated?
No more so than some of the stuff surrounding Watergate, the JFK assassination or UFOs.

I was extremely disappointed to learn that the rumors of Lou Holtz coaching at USC were unfounded. I was already looking forward to Mr. Holtz’s news conference next fall in which he would comment on how the Trojans match up poorly in their contest with Oregon State and how lucky they will be to get out of Corvallis with a victory over such a highly talented team.

April Fool’s Day came a little late this year. While looking for new ways to torment loyal USC fans, I could not have come up with such a diabolical scheme. Holtz replacing Robinson! Your staff definitely worked overtime on this one.
