Rescue Mission Short on Toys for Giveaway
The Ventura County Rescue Mission is holding a toy giveaway in Oxnard today--even though there are not enough toys to distribute to all the children signed up to receive a Christmas gift.
The mission has 1,300 children signed up to receive toys, but only 961 gifts.
“It’s always worked out in the past,†said Carol Roberg, the associate director. “We’ve been promised these things from Toys for Tots and now that we’re in the eleventh hour, they’re telling us there’s no way the toys are going to come in.â€
Toys for Tots came up short on toys, Roberg said, because this year each city’s fire department is also collecting toys to distribute to social service offices.
Recipients of the toys reside in Oxnard and are either unemployed or receive public assistance.
“These are women whose welfare has been cut off or women whose husbands are in prison and they’re trying to raise their kids on their own,†Roberg said. “For many, these are the only gifts they’ll receive.â€
The toy giveaway, which starts at noon, will be held at 234 E. 6th St.
