Such popular gay spots as Dragstrip 66 and Cherry are widely known. Here are some lesser-known dance clubs that attract gay men and lesbians.
Firehouse, 696 N. Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, (310) 289-1353. This 1 1/2-year-old club aims to puh-lease its dancers, offering the finest in house music nightly. 21 and over, cover varies.
Gold 9, 13625 Moorpark Ave., Sherman Oaks, (818) 986-0285. The door’s always open at this smallish, discreet Valley bar, where the locals treat you nicely and a round of pool will cost only 50 cents. More important, the jukebox sets the right mood, with CDs ranging from Blondie to the “Beaches” soundtrack. 21 and over, no cover.
Hubba Hubba at Rudolpho’s on the fourth Friday of the month, 2500 Riverside Drive, Silver Lake, (213) 662-4021. Never one to miss a beat, Dragstrip 66 DJ Paul V spins everything from pop to punk, soul to funk, with occasional live bands. 21 and over, cover varies.
Michelle’s XXX Revue on Tuesdays at 7969 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, (213) 654-0280. Five years high and running, this black lesbian club plays hip-hop and funk. 21 and over, $10 cover.
Oil Can Harry’s, 11502 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, (818) 760-9749. If you want to dance the two-step with a fellow urban cowboy, Oil Can Harry’s is the joint for you. This venerable gay bar offers free country western dance lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:45 p.m. and all-night line-dancing thereafter. (Saturday is retro disco night). 21 and over, cover varies.
The Plaza, 739 N. La Brea Ave., Hollywood. (213) 939-0703. A gay Latino transvestite club with shows nightly at 10:15 p.m. and midnight. 21 and over, $5 cover.
Queen Mary, 12249 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, (818) 506-5619. For going on four decades, this Studio City nightclub gives its stage to female impersonators Wednesdays through Sundays, allowing various drag divas a chance to do their thing for a primarily gay audience. 21 and over, cover varies.
